Agra Carpets

Persian Agra Carpet - Carol Piper Rugs

Since the height of the Mughal Empire in the sixteenth century, Agra has been the artistic center of India. It is home to the Taj Mahal and also to countless carpet weavers, calligraphers, and stone carvers.

Traditionally, carpets from Agra were influenced by the design language of the great classical Persian rugs. When the carpet industry in Persia all but came to a halt during the eighteenth century, however, rugs from Agra prospered and found their way into some of the most prominent European collections.

Agra carpets were often woven with a color palette that leaned heavily toward the cooler end of the spectrum, reflecting the intensely hot climate in this central Indian city. Ivories, blues, lavender and aubergine are found in some of the most beautiful rugs from Agra and, although they are very rare Agras woven from cotton are an exotic treat among carpet enthusiasts.

Today, antique Agras are prized for their cool colorations combined with intricate yet classical designs.
