Early 20th century Mahal
|
Mahal carpets are 20th century rugs woven near the city of Arak, within the central Persian Markazi province. Mahal carpets were the successors of the great late nineteenth century Sultanabads which were also woven near Arak. Like the Sultanabads before them, Mahal carpets were also woven for export to European and American markets.
Mahals exhibit many of the same technical and aesthetic properties as their older Sultanabad cousins. They were woven with a less uniform and more open weave than most other Persian rugs, thus they exhibit larger scale designs which are spare and more paired down in form. These rugs are prized in the market for their tremendous aesthetic appeal and demonstrate that it is color and design which determine the value of a great carpet, and not knot count.
