In the late nineteenth century, the Manchester England based firm Ziegler & Co. set up rug production in Sultanabad, presently known as Arak in central Persia, in order to weave rugs for export to European and American markets. Although Ziegler was not responsible for the production of every rug in Sultanabad, the firm’s presence was instrumental in revitalizing the long-dormant Persian rug industry. In fact, the name Ziegler is still applied to an extraordinarily beautiful Sultanabad today.
Sultanabad rugs were rendered with a looser, less uniform weave and thus exhibit larger scale and more paired-down designs than other traditional Persian rugs. Additionally, a Sultanabad rug utilizes a complex color spectrum of secondary and tertiary colors not typically seen in other Persian rugs. Colors that are considered unthinkable in an antique rug, such as stoic taupes, jarring acidic greens, or ripe persimmon red are the palette of a great Sultanabad. The sophisticated design and colors as well as a rarefied provenance make Sultanabad rugs some of the most sought after antiques on the market today.
